Hello Beth,

Biography:

I’m Linda Maginity, running for BOC District #1, which includes all of Green Lake Township and precincts 1 & 4 in Blair Township. This July, I’ll be 65 years young. I’ve been a self-employed bookkeeper/business consultant for the past 30+ years. My volunteer work includes serving as a Cub Scout leader and Pack Treasurer for Pack #19. I remained as treasurer for years after my son left Scouts, until the pack found a replacement. Additionally, I and other residents have worked together to oppose the locations of the adult book store (small win), the location of the full nude strip club (failed), and most recently, the location of a tire service & tow yard (TBD), all in Blair Township. I also volunteered with “Voters Not Politicians” as an educator, giving presentations in NW lower MI to teach voters about gerrymandering and why we needed an independent, non-partisan citizen redistricting commission (win!). I’ve also served as an election worker, specifically as a receiving clerk with Blair Township since 2018.

I have been a resident of Blair Township for 40 years and do not know how or what decisions the commission has made that affect the residents of District #1. In my experience, the only time the BOC makes the news is when their decisions affect Traverse City proper. I’m running to learn, to represent, to share news and topics with the residents of District #1, and to ask for their input.

Issues:

#1 Affordable workforce housing is always top of mind these days. Too many businesses are lacking employees simply because people cannot afford to work and live here.

#2 Infrastructures. My neighborhood is approximately 50 years old now, and the streets are crumbling. As I drive around my district, I see the same lack of maintenance or simply aging and crumbling residential streets.

#3 Growth is inevitable because we do live in a desirable area, but growth for the sake of growth without considering the consequences to our beautiful lands and waterways is careless. We need to protect and preserve the beauty while making room for growth.

#4 Communications! I know the BOC website isn’t as user-friendly as it could be, and watching the videos of the meetings can be challenging. I’ve set up a Facebook page and a blog page that mirror information with which I will communicate and interact with the residents of District #1.

Qualities:

I attended NMC in the mid-80s and again in the late 90s. The first time, I studied Business Administration with an accounting emphasis, and later, I studied computer software/web development. I have been a self-employed bookkeeper for over 30 years with experience in multiple industries: hotels & restaurants, general contracting and subcontractors, local government and manufacturing, retail and medical doctors. Some of my clients are franchisees and have become not only #1 in this size market but #1 companywide. I feel that I’m uniquely qualified to serve on the BOC, having worked with and consulted for a number of successful businesses.
